Essential Oils for First Aid

Summer weather sends all of us into the great outdoors, even if it's just the park or ballfield down the street. Occasionally, a skinned knee or bug bite can cause a temporary delay in summer fun but here are some great natural remedies to make for your first aid kit using essential oils.

Aromatherapy Salve
2 ounce jar herbal salve
15 drops tea tree essential oil
10 drops lemon essential oil
5 drops thyme essential oil

With a toothpick or small stir-stick, stir essential oils in to herbal salve. Apply to cuts or scrapes to help prevent infection and promote rapid healing.

Aromatherapy Clay
1 tablespoon powdered bentonite clay
1 - 2 tablespoons distilled water
6 drops essential lavender oil
4 drops essential chamomile oil
2 drops essential peppermint oil

In a small bowl, combine the powdered clay, water and essential oils until well mixed. Clay should be a thick paste that adheres well to skin when applied. Apply to bug bites, stings and wounds from splinters to help stop itching, pull toxins out and reduce swelling.

Aloe Vera Burn Spray
20 drops essential lavender oil
20 drops essential geranium oil
2 drops tea tree essential oil
4 ounces aloe vera juice

Pour aloe and oils into a spray bottle. Shake well before each use. Application of this spray to a burn or even sunburn can lessen damage from the burn, ease pain and swelling, promote new skin growth and deter infection and lessen scar damage.
